Conclusion
All in all, water in Singapore is very precious, we have learnt to cherish every drop of water that we have and not waste our feeble amount of water not enough to even suffice our nation let alone afford to be wasted. The trip, however has opened our eyes as we have never thought that we would see such litter near the river. We took for granted our clean and systematic cleaning systems that we always thought litter was not a problem in Singapore and our rivers and clean country is not to be take for granted.
GI question 1:What is the quality of water in the waterway?
Firstly, the general water quality in the waterway at the Kallang River, was quite good. We noticed minimal pollution with only a few sources of litter along the river. There was ,however a significant cluster of litter along the river bank as the rain and the storm drain had collected a huge amount of litter. This was of concern as the litter could easily be washed off into the river.Next, the individual test sites: X and Y, surprisingly had identical results and both had healthy readings except for the temperatures as they were taken at different times. For both site X and Y, we noticed that the dissolved oxygen level was 4ppm, the pH level 7 and the turbidity 7JTU. This as a healthy range of results and is both potable and survivable. As for the temperature, we found that the temperature in site X was 30°C at 10.20am while the temperature at site Y was 34°C. Finally, traces of pollutants and algae were minimal.
GI question 2: How do human activities affect the quality of water in the waterway?
We did not notice many positive human activities, however, from the rubbish collected along the river, we can easily infer that littering is a major issue in Singapore still, and that because of the litter, the river has a hazard of having litter flushed into it. There was also construction about 50 metres away from the river which could result in sediments being washed into the river.
Individual reflection
Matthew:
What I learnt About Singapore's Water ad my part as a citizen
I have learnt many things from this coursework. Firstly, I learnt the history of Singapore’s water. Secondly, I learnt the importance of water and why we should do our part to conserve it. Thirdly, I have learnt how to keep the water clean. Most importantly, I learnt to plan and manage my time properly. I think the quality of water is good in Singapore because there is very little litter in the rivers and there are cleaners sent to clean the rivers. I do not contribute the human activities affecting the quality of water.
Our project in a nutshell
In a nutshell, our project was a success. I am a considerate person and i do my part by not littering in the water. However, our road to success was not perfect, we faced some difficulties such as arranging times to meet up, but these problems were solved eventually. A few things that had gone well, firstly, we made decisions very quickly which resulted in fast progress. Secondly, we had great teamwork. Thirdly, we managed to split the jobs equally and complete our tasks on time, so that we were able to combine our research. If given another chance to do this project, I would start planning with my coursework partner much earlier and mark out the dates we are able to meet up. In the future, I could do more research and findings to extend our coursework information and details.
Joel Ng:
What I learnt About Singapore's Water ad my part as a citizen
From the trip to Bishan Park, I have learnt that even the efforts from our government is not enough to keep our river spotless and it is still our part to stop littering and pollution no matter how far you are from the river as the litter can always be washed off into the river as we had noticed with the storm drains. I also am grateful that our Singapore waters are clean and drinkable and understand that it is our responsibilty and our fight to stop pollution and maintain the clean standards of Singapore's water. I must not just continue to abstain from littering, but I should also play my part and pick up litter, help make awareness for our waters and other activites to stop the pollution and water wastage.
Our project in a nutshell
Generally, our team was quite a effective and efficient one as both of us knew what we had to do, were responsible and were quick in making decisions. Our team spirit led us to finish our work on time, with Matthew doing the research and I doing the report. Another positive side was that my mother was a geography teacher, thus when we were in need of help, I could always seek her help and advice. However, like every team, we had our flaws. Firstly, our CCA dates were exactly alternate and we had problems meeting up as all the way to the weekends one of us had CCA. Matthew had also many intensive and long training times for rugby and many competitions, thus I found it especially tough to find any time at all to meet. Thus we were unable to meet very often. Another issue was the website maker was very unreliable and my website had closed without y data saved many times, thus making it very frustrating. In the future, further improvements to our report is to do more research on the Bishan Park, the river and perhaps have more sources of information from PUB or websites like US environmental protection agency (US EPA). We could also try to have more readings if possible of the water quality in our river for more acute and fair results.
